COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (July 5, 2017) – Whitley County’s largest employer, Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI) recently announced plans to expand its facility in Columbia City and add 33 new jobs.

The company plans to invest over $75 million in real estate improvements and personal property improvements.

The expansion will add new rolling equipment, new buildings for storage, will improve site grading and drainage, and improve roads and lots throughout the site. The new equipment will allow SDI to produce 240,000 tons of new steel products annually.

I think I can speak for everyone in the Whitley County when I say that we are very proud of our close relationship with SDI, and we are delighted that they are continuing to grow,” said Jon Myers, President of the Whitley County EDC. “When SDI grows, Whitley County grows.”

SDI currently has 705 high wage employees at the Structural and Rail Division this will increase to nearly 740 once the project is finished.

“We appreciate the partnership that has been built over the years with the State of Indiana and Whitley County, and are excited to continue that partnership through investment in the Structural and Rail Division expansion that will allow us to utilize existing excess melting and casting capability and further diversify our product mix,” said Chris Gionti, Structural and Rail Division General Manager.

“We are pleased and very proud to support SDI on this project,” said Whitley County Commissioner George Schrumpf, “SDI has been a significant asset to the Whitley County community, and we appreciate all the company does to invest in and support our community.”

The Whitley County Council approved a 10-year tax abatement in support of the project, at the request of the Whitley County EDC.

The Structural and Rail Division located at 700 E in Columbia City, produces a variety of parallel flange sections such as Wide Flange Beams, American Standard Beams, Manufactured Housing Beams, H Piling and Channel sections for the construction, transportation and industrial machinery markets. In addition, the facility produces standard and premium grade railroad rails and has the ability to weld these in lengths up to 1,600 feet.
